FAQ
Is downloading YouTube thumbnails legal?+
Thumbnails are publicly served by YouTube. It's fine to save one for personal reference, competitive research, thumbnail A/B testing or fair-use commentary. Do NOT republish someone else's thumbnail as your own — thumbnails are usually copyrighted by the channel.
Which resolution should I pick?+
Always try Max Resolution (1280×720 / maxresdefault.jpg) first. If the creator uploaded a low-res video, YouTube may not have it — then fall back to HD (640×480 / sddefault.jpg) or HQ (480×360).
Why does Max Resolution sometimes fail?+
`maxresdefault.jpg` only exists if the source video was uploaded in 720p or higher. Very old videos and some Shorts only have `hqdefault.jpg`. The tool shows every quality that actually loads.
Does this work for YouTube Shorts?+
Yes. Shorts use the same thumbnail URL scheme. Paste the Shorts URL — the tool auto-extracts the 11-character video ID.
Can I download in bulk?+
Not from this tool — one video at a time. If you need bulk research, our Postlabs research suite pulls thumbnails plus titles, VPH and CTR at scale.
Do you store the URLs I paste?+
No. Extraction runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
Great thumbnails ship channels. Postlabs ships channels.
Postlabs generates and A/B-tests thumbnails automatically alongside scripts, voice and publishing.
